Poem 39 of 43

Three Trees

Three trees framing a golden path of light across a park at twilight

It was the Sunday before last,

and my uniform of green I took off.

The sun was dawning into the night,

a twilight’s soft glow enclosing the park

with inviting light.

In the middle of a field

stood trees of three.

Despite the twilight’s yawning,

yellow and lively hues

were as bright as the sea—

waves of light,

warm and inviting.

Internal conflict—

I gave up my mind from fighting.

A path from the three

was painted before my eyes.

No signal flaring,

no trick or lofty disguise.

The colors invited

my stricken heart.

My footsteps took flight

before a question or thought

could form or start.

The light gathered above the three

to form a ceiling.

I gazed beyond

as my heart transformed

with a tender feeling.

As I walked this path,

it seemed to foreshadow my fate:

a doorway between the trees,

light forming a gate.

I pressed onward

toward the leaning sun.

As my spirit leapt,

I knew with the light

I was one.

I walked through the gate.

There was nothing more

that needed to be expressed.

A sacred path.

I’ll hold the flame I found inside

that fateful setting sun.
