Poem 03 of 35

The Still of Night

I sit now upon my rocking chair

The still of night is calm and fair

Crickets play their song of delight

The trickster fox slips through the night

My thoughts now heavy and grim

Whiskey’s touch pricks at my chin

I'll remain steady as I rock

No grandeur of drink is mine to mock

Lightning bugs now settle around

Their melody great makes no verbal sound

They light a message for my weary eyes

A stroke of twelve plans my demise

I hear the clock within my walls

It bellows throughout my dusty halls

My sanctuary calls forth but I'll retreat instead

Slowly I walk to the chamber of my bed

For now my dreams entice me as I rest my head
